MATTHIAS WOHLBRECHT studied singing in Würzburg and Milan. After permanent engagements in Milan, Rostock, Darmstadt, and Mannheim, he has been a permanent member of the opera ensemble at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe since 2004. In the 2019/20 season, he performed roles including the Captain (Wozzeck), Pong (Turandot), Four Servants (The Tales of Hoffmann), the Gingerbread Witch (Hansel and Gretel), and Max (Der Freischütz).
Wohlbrecht's extensive repertoire includes roles such as Mime (Das Rheingold, Siegfried), Loge (Das Rheingold), the Captain (Wozzeck), Herod (Salome), Shuisky (Boris Godunov), Tichon (Katya Kabanova), Aegisthus (Elektra), the Gingerbread Witch (Hansel and Gretel), Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus), Max (Der Freischütz), the Hunchback / the Youth (Die Frau ohne Schatten), and Pedrillo (The Abduction from the Seraglio).
In 2017, he was the acclaimed centerpiece of the world premiere of Wahnfried by Avner Dorman, directed by Keith Warner in Karlsruhe, in which he played Houston Stewart Chamberlain. For this role, he was nominated as "Best Opera Singer of the Year" by Opernwelt magazine. The production of Wahnfried will be released on Blu-ray by Arthouse in 2020.
Matthias Wohlbrecht is regularly invited to perform internationally. In 2007, he made his debut as Pong at Teatro La Fenice in Venice. In 2008, he performed Loge, and in 2010, Mime (Siegfried) at Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari. In 2011, he debuted as Herod in Trieste and sang Loge at the Westpac Opera in Auckland, New Zealand. As Mime (Das Rheingold), he performed in Seoul in 2014, and in 2015, he appeared as the Gingerbread Witch in Moscow. In 2016, he sang Albert (Die tote Stadt) with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in Paris. In Germany, guest engagements have taken him to Munich (Ring in One Evening – Am Gasteig) and Berlin (Die Jakobsleiter – Philharmonie).
In season 2024/2025 he has sung Herodes in Wuppertaler Bühnen, Loge and Mime in Koblenz and Loge in Dortmund.
