Jean-Christophe Lesage

Staging

JEAN CHRISTOPHE LESAGE was born in Freiburg, he studied dance at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse with Roger Ritz and Pierre Lacotte. In 1981, he started his career at the Ballet of Bonn under the direction of Peter Van Dick, followed by a contract with the Basel Ballet under the direction of Heinz Spoerli and finally as a soloist at the Bayerisches Staatsballett (Bavarian State Ballet) in Munich, under the direction of Konstanze Vernon. He became a ballet master at the Bayerisches Staatsballett in 1999 under the direction of Ivan Liska. In 2004, he joined the Víctor Ullate Ballet - Comunidad de Madrid and worked beside Víctor Ullate, and in 2007 he arrived at the Vienna State Opera. He has been active as a ballet master for the Vienna State Ballet under the direction of Gyula Harangozo, Manuel Legris and Martin Schläpfer until today. 

In 2014 he was invited to stage A Midsummernight’s Dream (choreography by Jorma Elo) for the National Ballet of Finland in Helsinki. This was followed by Eventide (choreography by Helen Pickett) for the Boston Ballet and La Fille Mal Gardée (choreography F. Ashton) for the Opéra de Bordeaux, for the Asami Maki Ballet, the Hungarian Ballet, the Slovak Ballet and in Rome. In July 2019, he staged La Sylphide from P. Lacotte for the Teatro Colon ballet. He has assisted many choreographers, among which: Roland Petit, P. Lacotte, John Neumeier, Hans Van Manen, Jiří Kylián, Sir. Peter Wright, Jean-Christophe Maillot, Thierry Malandin, Ashley Page, Helen Pickett, Jorma Elo, Manuel Legris and Alexei Ratmansky. In Vienna, he was in charge of staging choreographies by Rudolf Nureyev, John Cranko, George Balanchine, Frederick Ashton, Kenneth MacMillan and Rudi Van Danzig as well as organizing rehearsals for the Vienna State Ballet.
