Programme: Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No 8
A vast symphonic orchestra, eight soloists, along with both mixed and children’s choirs – such forces are required every time Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No 8. is performed. No wonder it’s often referred to as the Symphony of a Thousand. The Eighth is one of the composer’s most ambitious masterpieces, uniting the spiritual and the worldly in a grandiose vocal-symphonic soundscape. It features the Catholic hymn Veni, Creator Spiritus and the closing scene from Goethe’s Faust. Mahler himself described the symphony as “a great joy-bringer.” On September 14, it will once again unite musicians and their audience in a shared celebration of joy.
