The Creative Team withdraws, Forcing Cancellation of 'Parsifal' at the Latvian National Opera

This week the Latvian National Opera and Ballet received official notification from the representative of the creative team, stating that the team – led by Katharina Wagner – is no longer able to realize the production in accordance with its established artistic and directorial vision for one of the greatest operas ever – Richard Wagner’s masterpiece Parsifal - planned for October 2025 in Riga.

As the notification reads: “It is with great regret that we must announce that the production of Parsifal, scheduled for October 2025, cannot be realized as planned due to the cancellation of a key team member.”

Artistic excellence, professionalism, and respect for partners and audiences are the values upon which the Latvian National Opera and Ballet is founded. We express deep disappointment regarding both the content and timing of this announcement – delivered just three months before the scheduled premiere. The Latvian National Opera and Ballet and international cast have been preparing for this production for over a year, and sets and costumes were almost completed at the time of the withdrawal.

We extend our sincere apologies to the audience and outstanding cast of international soloists and to Maestro Marek Janowski, all of whom have been preparing for this new production and will be directly impacted by this decision of creative team.

While alternative solutions – including the replacement of the withdrawn collaborator – were carefully explored in consultation with the team, the extremely short notice has made it impossible to proceed with the production within the originally announced timeframe.

We thank our audience, supporters, and artistic community for their understanding.
