Aida, Luisa Miller, Amahl and the Night Visitors, Nijinski - the upcoming productions of the Latvian National Opera

There are 4 premeries of new opera and ballet production expected at the Latvian National Opera.

The legendary production of Giuseppe Verdi’s “Aida, designed by the outstanding Latvian artist Ilmārs Blumbergs and directed by Māra Ķimele, will return to the stage of Latvian National Opera on March 6, 2022. Verdi’s late work is one of the masterpieces of opera history – light and darkness, love and hate, triumph and defeat, hope and death all stand alongside one another. The LNO Orchestra will be conducted by Pier Giorgio Morandi, the outstanding interpret of Italian operas. Leading cast: Tatjana Trenogina, Andris Ludvigs, Anna Matis and Pavlo Balakin. “Aida” will be performed also on March 9 and 12.

Pier Giorgio Morandi will also be the music director and conductor of the concert performance of Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Luisa Miller", which will take place on March 19, 2022. “Luisa Miller” is a romantic tragedy in three acts based on the play “Kabale und Liebe” (“Intrigue and Love”) by the German dramatist Friedrich von Schiller. In this work Verdi returns to his favourite topic – conflict among fathers, children and their lovers. Roles of the opera will be interpreted by soloists Jūlija Vasiļjeva, Rinalds Kandalincevs, David Junghoon Kim, Rihards Mačanovskis, Monika-Evelin Liiv, Pavlo Balakin, Laura Grecka and Artjoms Safronovs.

A new production of the one-act opera “Amahl and the Night Visitors” by Gian Carlo Menotti will be premiered on March 26, 2022 at the New Hall. The music director and conductor of the production will be Andris Veismanis, stage directors – Anta Priedīte and Gundars Silakaktiņš, set designer – Aigars Ozoliņš, and costume designer – Jurate Silakaktiņa. Roles will be performed by soloists of the Latvian National Opera and students of the Riga Cathedral Choir School.

The premiere of Nijinski - the contemporary ballet performance by the choreographer Marco Goecke that deals with the ballet dancer and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky, will take place on April 14, 2022. It reveals the most important moments in Nijinsky’s life on and off stage showing how closely art and madness are related. The original of “Nijinski” was premièred at the Theaterhaus Stuttgart’s Gauthier Dance festival to great acclaim in 2016; since then, it has been performed on worldwide tours to great success. In 2017 Marco Goecke received the Italian prize “Danza&Danza” for “Nijinski” as the best choreography of the year.
